Laid off former six-figure salary corporate professional battles detachment while navigating surreal long-term unemployment. Created using Bing by the author.

After an illuminating portfolio workshop yesterday, it’s time to rebuild my portfolio from scratch, this time using Wix. With limited funds, I can no longer afford web hosting, so the robust portfolio I painstakingly created on Siteground over the summer will soon be inaccessible. I have temporarily published on www.JournoPortfolio.com; however, the free plan is very limited and lacks multi-device user friendliness. To make matters more challenging, I’ll have to do this rebuild solely on my phone, as I lost access to my portable desktop devices after being laid off from a Senior Designer role at Fortune 500 fintech in June.

While daunting, I know that anything is possible with determination and creativity. Just yesterday, despite these setbacks, I was able to submit a custom vector logo and social media banner concepts as part of speculative work for a new job application - all from my mobile device. I’ve figured out workarounds to use the tools available to me to continue design work. I’ve also discovered ways to keep designing, producing and publishing my magazine with just my phone with Canva. I even duplicated my magazine template to adjust and package and am offering it for sale.

This experience has shown me that I need to rebuild my portfolio in a more sustainable way. While I will always own my work through my source files, having my portfolio tied to one hosting platform made it vulnerable. As I rebuild on Wix, I’m determined to see this challenge as an opportunity to create something more flexible and future-proof. With resourcefulness and resolve, I can use what I have available to me now to showcase my skills and talents. Onward and upward.

Laid off professional, feeling like they're falling from a cliff, scurries to find income.
